Water gets in at a flashing joint, a nail pop, a cracked boot around a vent pipe or a lifted shingle, then runs down the decking or along a rafter until it finds somewhere to drop. The roof gets walked and the usual suspects get checked in order: the flashing where the roof meets a wall or chimney, the valleys where two planes dump into each other, the rubber boots around vent pipes that go hard and split with age, and the gutter line, because water that cannot get away backs up under the shingle edge. What you get back is a photograph of the actual detail that is failing and a straight answer about whether it is a repair or something bigger.
